Troy Matthews
Senior Advisor to the Board
Troy Matthews is a social media influencer and political podcaster who is heavily focused on social justice and equal rights. Troy got his start as a teacher in an adolescent substance use treatment facility in Los Angeles, CA. While teaching full time, Troy got his masters in political science remotely from The George Washington University. Heavily influenced by his time working with youth, Troy went on to work on multiple political campaigns as well as interning for the California State Assembly. He then switched his focus to nonprofit management and development, working in homeless youth services and healthcare. Most recently, Troy was the development director for a nonprofit focused on using technology to increase access to health benefits for low income families.
During the pandemic, Troy sought out the use of social media as an outlet to discuss the issues of the day while on lock down, and quickly discovered the video sharing platform, TikTok. In less than a year he had amassed a following of over 100K followers. Troy’s TikTok community continues to grow, and he is now on Instagram and Twitter. In the fall of 2021 Troy launched his podcast: Just Buy Less Coffee, Answering the Deeper Questions of American Politics, as a long form version of his TikTok commentary, which routinely charts in the top 200 podcasts in the nation for news and politics.
Troy is passionate about education, universal healthcare, fair housing, police reform, voting rights, equity for communities of color, LGBTQ rights, and now most urgently, the right to reproductive freedom in the United States and around the world.
